Strategic advisory for challenger brands in the professional audio and music products industry.
Let's talkThe work
The gap between a company's vision and market traction is rarely a product problem. It's typically a strategy, organization, or execution problem. Even the best of products can get lost in the noise — and they often do — when the go-to-market plan isn't built for the fight.
I work with a small number of challenger and growth-focused companies in the professional audio and music products industry — companies with genuinely good products and real market potential, but whose current execution is not yet up to the task of achieving their brand vision.
Fewer clients. Deeper impact.
Is this you?
You have a genuinely good product. Some traction. A brand that's starting to mean something.
But the competition is increasingly aggressive, your go-to-market plan isn't producing the results you expected, and the team that got you here may not be the team that gets you there. You know something has to change — you're just not sure what, or in what order.
You don't need a consultant who will audit you and disappear. You need someone who has actually been in the room — who understands the professional audio and music products industry from the inside, has built brands, managed channels, and made the tough but winning calls in this business.
And you need someone who will tell you the truth, even when it's uncomfortable.
Where I can help
What's the strategy — and is it actually executable? Stress-testing direction, priorities, and the assumptions underneath them.
Channel strategy, market prioritization, launch execution. Getting from "we have a great product" to "we have market traction."
Building a brand that earns trust across every touchpoint — not just at the point of sale. Quality and consistency as competitive advantage.
Channel mapping, partner evaluation, distribution architecture. The structure that determines whether distribution partners become a strength or a liability.
Sometimes the team that got you here isn't the team that gets you there. Honest assessment of what the organization needs to execute at the next level.
A portfolio is a strategic asset. Real innovation isn't self-declared; customers confirm it with their money. Finding the convergence between what a company builds and what customers value.

About
Ray van Straten is a thirty-year professional audio and music products industry veteran who builds brand value, scales businesses, and delivers market-leading results. Today, as a strategic advisor, he partners with companies that are ready to take decisive action to sharpen strategy, strengthen execution, win customers, and capture market share.
Ray brings a distinctive perspective to business, shaped by his experience as both a seasoned executive and an accomplished musician. Where others see isolated operational noise, Ray identifies underlying harmony and dissonance—spotting subtle changes in channel behavior or strategic friction long before they hit the bottom line. It is a mindset that balances rigorous commercial and financial discipline with intuitive go-to-market thinking. And when market dynamics shift, his approach provides the real-time agility to adapt execution without losing operational momentum.
Ray has earned a reputation for driving collaboration, unifying cross-functional teams. At QSC, Ray was instrumental in scaling the business from a power amplifier manufacturer to a leading global pro audio brand. Across executive, sales, and marketing leadership roles, he held full P&L accountability, reshaped distribution strategy, and helped build a brand grounded in product quality, customer trust, and strong channel relationships. He informed product strategy and portfolio definition across multiple generations of products and led the market introduction of digital mixers, subwoofers, line arrays, and loudspeakers — most notably the QSC K Series, which became the industry gold standard.
At Yamaha Corporation of America, Ray served as National Accounts Manager, where he owned the high-stakes relationship between the world's largest music products manufacturer and the world's largest music retailer — orchestrating alignment across sales, marketing, product management, and merchandising teams in both organizations, doubling revenue in year one, with comparable gains the following year. Earlier, as District Manager, he earned Salesman of the Year honors in his first year, and then went on to set record sales performance across two concurrent territories. His Yamaha career began as a Sales Engineer for digital hard-disk recording products, demonstrating his acumen at the intersection of music and technology that remains a passion today.
Ray has served on the board of directors for NAMM, the music, sound and event industry's trade association, where he chaired its Professional Development Committee. A lifelong musician, he continues to play piano, perform, compose, and record, while actively advocating for music and arts education.
Point of view
Most consultants deliver frameworks. What CEOs and founders actually need is judgment — someone who can help them see what's been there all along, buried under the pressure of trying to do everything at once.
I believe honest counsel matters more than practiced advice. Naming what's really in the way is often the hardest part. Working through it takes partnership. Breaking through takes both.
